We Still Celebrate the Workaholics

In just the sports world, we see some shining examples of guys who don’t know how to gear it down and turn it off. It’s all around us, though.

The big news this week in sports is the Twins firing their general manager. For a stable, plodding organization like the Twins, it’s huge news. It was a necessary move, in my opinion, but still shocking. Yet, the replacement was their old GM, Terry Ryan. He’s not “old” in years, but he had stepped away four years ago because his 13 years as GM had been so “stressful.” Now, he’s back. And many in Twins-land are glad.

Two years ago Urban Meyer quit the Florida Gators before their bowl game because of stress related issues. He somehow was miraculously healed and made his return even before the bowl game was played. Then, a year later he really did step aside. Now, his name is being floated again. Some time away, huh?

Kansas State brings back Bill Snyder as football coach.

Guys who stepped away from the game because of stress now get back into that very same game. And we love it.

We don’t celebrate those who have a steady rhythm in life. How boring. No sir! It’s burn out rather than rust out!

In part it’s because we are an addictive society. We don’t know how to moderate. We don’t do “feasting” or “fasting.” We do obesity and bulimia.

We don’t do moderate politics. We have to have the most rabid liberal or the most rabid conservative we can find and our mantra is “NO SURRENDER!”

We need to find the rhythm of our lives. The Kingdom of God provides rhythm. We need to get into that life rhythm, find that “bass note” and live. It doesn’t mean it isn’t intense. It doesn’t mean lethargy. But it does mean a life more in tune with the rhythm of heaven.
