The NIV Study Bible

A couple of quick thoughts HERE and HERE as the NIV is getting things updated with all their Bibles. While I am not a fan of study Bibles, I am glad to see Zondervan moving away from 1984 and into 2011.

Currently I am tooling around a hard copy of the Common English Bible and the NIV 2011. I have found the CEB refreshing in the New Testament, especially the epistles. Overall, I am still loving the NIV 2011.

  1. Thanks Dan. Us small time bloggers must stick together…

  2. We are part of the 99%!!! (Whatever that means.)

  3. I, too, have been reading the CEB alongside my updated NIV, and I find the CEB to have a livelier style than the NIV, especially in the OT. For example, note the alliteration in his passage:

Terror, trench, and trap are upon you,
ruler of the earth! (Isaiah 24:17 CEB)

Terror and pit and snare await you,
people of the earth. (Isaiah 24:17 NIV)

As an English major and lover of good writing style, I really appreciate the attention to style in the CEB. I am still not sure if I like “Human One” over “Son of Man” or “selfishness” over “flesh”. Overall, the CEB is a joy to read, and I especially like the fact that the CEB is not a strictly evangelical translation.
