Romans 1-3 is a passage that makes me cringe every time I read it. It’s not because it talks about very raw sin. It’s because it talks about me.
The tendency I find in some Christian circles is to take Romans 1 and bash away at homosexuality. But that misses Paul’s point throughout the first three chapters. Chapter breaks get in our way.
Romans 1 isn’t about homosexuality. Romans 2 isn’t about the arrogance of the Jews.
The whole point is Romans 3. No one is righteous. Not one. Which causes Romans 2:1 to shout at me every time I read this passage: “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.” (NIV 2011)
This examination stuff during Lent is just for the birds! 😉
