Suggestions for a “mini” Sabbatical

I am taking August off. My time in ministry and teaching has brought me to a place where I need the refreshing. My church is gracious to allow this time off, but a month is all we can afford.

My first week will be in solitude at a prayer center. Part of it will be time off with family.

In a concentrated amount of time, what do you suggest for a “mini” Sabbatical?

  1. How about a refreshing trip to visit the East Coast, it’s beautiful this time of year, and you could stay at our “hotel” for free. We’d love to have you! I know this is a dream, but you did ask for suggestions!!

    1. That would be just wonderful!

  2. Take many walks alone around nature trails, bodies of water or such (or invite Terri during this time).. talking and reflecting on the beauty of God and what He means to you two. All of your dreams and frustrations, nothing held back.

Maybe sit still much longer than you normally do, doing nothing but being silent and listening to Him. Sitting still is a good thing. You get to know more of your true self this way, it can be refreshing and frightening if you allow yourself to be as raw and real as possible.
If you go anywhere, realize God’s handiwork in people, places, sites, etc. and smile as much as you can, and quite often always find something to laugh about. it can bring tears of joy. and that is deep healing too. God bless!!

    1. What wonderful words. Thanks, Debbie.

Brian, I will have Foster’s “Longing for God” with me, along with a couple of other great spiritual books that draw me in. Thanks!

  3. some good reading (usually some spiritual reading) is always good during a sabbatical too.

  4. Sabbatical often relates to work – as in you have a sabbatical to refresh you vocationally. Maybe a good conference. Going away for some time to read and pray (even more that you have already planned? Perhaps just taking the time to read and pray every day at your own leisure?

Just some ideas. all the best.

    1. Great suggestions. I need the refreshing! Blessings, Mark.
