I was reading Leon Morris’ commentary on John and came across his appendix on “Truth.” There are some great thoughts on how John uses “truth” in his gospel.
Truth isn’t about intellectual freedom. We think it is. Academic freedom is a great freedom. But pursuit of “pure thought” is not the end. Truth is about entering into the liberating experience of being a disciple of the Lord. It is not complete independence. Truth is freedom from guilt and sin. It is fellowship with and the knowledge of God.
Jesus’ whole ministry was about bearing witness to the truth. Truth is about action, not just ascent to some thought. Believers should DO truth. It is the quality of action, not simply an abstract concept. Believers are worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:23f).
Truth is action. It is not just about what we know.
