The Need for Fire

The fire of the Spirit gives us pictures of several things. One of those things we need to have (and yet don’t talk about) is fire for cleansing.

Malachi 3 talks about the refiner’s fire in our lives. The fire needs to burn because it causes the junk to float to the top. Fire isn’t to be feared. Fire only purifies. Yet, we too often allow junk to pile up in our lives. Then, when the Spirit needs to work in our lives, the fire is so hot it bothers us.

We need to be bothered. American Christians need to be bothered. We need the fire of the Holy Spirit to make us sick of junk in our lives.

    I remember as a child I would watch my dad would do a controlled burning of the big hill on which we lived. He would do this every spring. The fire would burn all the old, dead grass, weeds and debris that that had carried over from the previous year. For a couple of weeks all that could be seen was the black soot and ash from the fire. It was not a pretty sight. But after that, hints of green started to show through. It wasn’t long until all that could be seen was green. The fire had a purpose and the ash acted as a fertilizer. The purpose for the fire was NEW GROWTH!

    Amen! We need to get uncomfortable. Why do we seek comfort so much when discomfort is what pushes us to change. Lord, purify us with your fire!
