Does the Church Shoot Its Wounded?

I am truly curious about reactions to this statement from Ted Haggard:
“The church has said, ‘Go to hell.’ The church chose not to forgive me, but instead to exile me,” he says.

If you have followed Ted Haggard’s story, as pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs to his rise as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, then his subsequent moral fall, do you think the church (his church specifically) gave him a “raw deal?” Or, is he taking advantage of a documentary that happens to feature him? Or, some of both?

If you have not kept up with the story, Christianity Today has a section where their articles have followed this episode. Click here.

Any thoughts?

One response to “Does the Church Shoot Its Wounded?”

  1. Such a tough call. On one hand, you have the “to whom much is given, much is required” mentality. On the other hand, we always want to see people restored like Christ did with Peter. I can only hope that we have good accountability around our leaders to prevent/avoid/detect moral failure before it happens. And when failure does happen, hopefully we help each other confess and restore each other in the faith.
