Do I know Christ? Time Magazine’s newest attempt to put a spin on Christian’s who doubt is an article on Mother Theresa and her supposed “crisis of faith.”

We so often chalk up people’s private questions to “crisis.” There can be doubt, but crisis? I would say that is not what marked the life of Mother Theresa. Cynics and agnostics would love to label it crisis, but that would rarely be the case.

All of us would be better off if we searched as deeply as Mother Theresa. If our constant cry was with Paul, “I want to know Christ,” we would be far better off in our Christian lives. It would leave us in a place of evaluation and questioning. The questioning would be in the very presence of Jesus, and when Jesus is present, the questions are very real and his presence is very comforting. We can doubt, but in his presence there really is no crisis.

I need to know Christ. I need to know him in experience. Reading the Bible for facts is so far below what that means in true life. I am called to know him like I would know my wife or know a very good friend. I must BE with him! When I know him, I will know his presence. And when Christ is present, I can know everything will be all right. Things may not come out like I would prefer, but if Jesus is in the house, it’s still all right. That’s why I must know him.
