Well it seems I have skipped entirely over “seeker sensitive”, “purpose-driven” and “megachurch” and gone to “missional.” All without knowing it. I had no idea I had such talent.
In reading the latest Leadership Journal I came across an article defining “missional” church. According to UK blogger Andrew Jones, “Missio Dei stems from the Triune God: the Father sends the Son, the Father and Son send the Spirit and the Son and the Spirit send the church into the world.” So, according to this article, a missional church is about doing God’s work in the world today. In this sense, it’s what has been there all along.
Quite honestly, I am flattered. I have had this missional craze all along, even though I look somewhat “traditional” (as much as a Pentecostal can). Throughout my current ministry I have been working hard to make sure we are about God’s work in this world.
We are now entering a conversation as a church body that would introduce what I would call a “Pentecostal Catechism.” There are four main areas we will probably focus on and determine with all that we are that we will see transformation happen in the lives of believers in these areas. We desire to see people transformed by the power of the Spirit. It is not just about knowledge. It is about experience and application as well. We are setting out on “mission” it would seem. For that I am grateful.
